Mughal-e-Azam (1960) The epic to end all epics, Mughal-e-Azam was the most expensive Bollywood film ever made at the time, and the first to be digitally colorized. The historical legend of a Mughal prince and his ill-fated love for a court dancer is a nostalgic favorite of all Indians and, reportedly, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s inspiration for Bajirao Mastani.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008) Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai are practically too pretty to look at in this period drama set in the Mughal Empire. Princess Jodhabai is forced to marry Emperor Akbar, but refuses to let him into her heart. Thankfully, she eventually capitulates; otherwise, they’d never have had their grandson, who built the Taj Mahal as a tribute to his own true love.
